Prop 13 and its Effect on the Cost of Living in California
I will attempt to not be political with this and just be informative. We all know Nov. is coming and soon the people of California will have to make some decisions. A lot of people don’t know what many of the ballot measure are that they vote will on. They go mostly for the “Big Ticket Items”. And of the ones that actually read the ballot measures they haven't done any real research to see what it would mean.
California despite being the 5th largest economy in the world continues to pass legislation that raises the cost of living here. In 2018 this was done with Prop 6 also known as the Gas Tax. Many people had complaints over the wording of the Ballot Measure saying it was confusing. Now in 2020 it will be done again with Prop 13.
What is Prop 13?
Prop 13 regulates property taxes so that the government can’t raise our taxes more than a certain percent over time. Good thing right?
Proposed Repeal Prop 13?
AG Becerra has put a partial repeal of prop 13 on the ballot. If people vote yes then taxes on business and commercial properties will increase drastically. ‘It’s on businesses that doesn’t effect me”. Wrong the repeal passes do we think that businesses will pay all these new taxes and not raise prices? Many people know this however the wording on the ballot measure is tricky yet again.
Wording of Ballot Measure
Increases Funding for Public Schools, Community Colleges, and Local Government Services by Changing Tax Assessment of Commercial and Industrial Property, Initiative Constitutional Amendment.
For many this will sound like a good thing and polling has proven this. Under this revision a poll shows that 60% of people approve of the measure. However, under the previous revision only 46% of people polled approved. which is the reason for the change is to “trick” more people into voting for it.
Your Choice
What you decide is up to you. All I hope is to inform people so they know what it is that they are voting for. In many ways this could be a great measure but I have no doubt that they could raise the money for schools and local governments in a better way than raising taxes even more.
